Alan Knapp

Alan Knapp, MPA has over two decades of experience as a government relations, public policy, and public affairs professional, and is also an aspiring entrepreneur and successful writer. He is currently the Founder and Managing Principal of Avison Strategies, LLC, a boutique government relations and public affairs firm based in Washington, DC, where he helps clients with informed policy and business direction involving employee benefit programs and their measured outcomes on wealth, health, and wellbeing for individuals and the organizations that employ them.
He is also the Founder of CareeResilient, LLC, a pre-seed third-party administrator employee benefits company focused on delivering education, professional development, and career protection insurance benefits through the workplace for companies and their employees.
He is also currently President and Treasurer of the Government Relations Association (GRA), a 501(c)(6) nonprofit member association representing government relations professionals writ large, advancing best practices, financial management, and protecting their 1st Amendment rights to petition government for a redress of grievances. He created and provides leadership direction for the association’s Professional and Future Leaders program, working with over 150 colleges and universities nationwide to provide government relations certificate pathways for professional development, and scholarships for deserving at-need students.
He writes a regular professional newsletter, Knapp Knowtions, providing thought leadership on workplace culture, benefits, human capital management, and future of work policies impacting engagement and productivity.
Alan began his career as a political appointee in the United States House of Representatives for three different Members of Congress from two different states. He served for over ten years in various senior legislative, communications, and constituent services roles. After leaving Capitol Hill, he led government relations departments for two different nonprofit business and member associations.
He also serves on the board of directors for the Institute for Career Transitions, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the Boston, MA area and advises them on federal and state advocacy that generates strategies, financial support, understanding, and collaboration for educated professionals facing lengthy career transitions and challenges.
Alan earned an MPA in Public Affairs and Administration with a distinction in Policy Analysis from Michigan State University and a BA in Political Science and Communication from Western Michigan University. He is currently a candidate in Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business LEAD Certificate program.
