HSA/FSA Eligible Screen Strain Relief

Blue light eyewear for the hours in front of a screen, and sit-stand desks and ergonomic seating for the hours at it. For qualified customers, these may be HSA/FSA eligible with a letter of medical necessity from an independent licensed practitioner.

Two things you can actually change

Most of us now spend more of the day looking at a lit screen than at anything else. Then the clock stops and the screens do not. Dinner, a couple of episodes, a scroll in bed. The complaints that follow are predictable: tired eyes by mid afternoon, headaches that track with long sessions, and a harder time settling down at night.

Blue light eyewear is about what reaches your eyes. Clear or tinted lenses filter part of the spectrum coming off a display, and people wear them to make long screen sessions more comfortable. Clear lenses for the workday, deeper tints for the evening.

The other half is what you are sitting at. Nine hours in one position is its own kind of strain, and it tends to show up in the neck, shoulders and lower back rather than the eyes. A desk that moves between sitting and standing lets you change position without stepping away from the work.

Eligibility follows the same rule for both. It comes down to whether the purchase treats, mitigates, or prevents a diagnosed condition, and whether an independent licensed practitioner documents that connection.

It depends on the pair and on your documentation. Prescription eyeglasses and prescription contact lenses are commonly HSA/FSA eligible because they correct vision, and a blue light filter added to a prescription pair is usually treated as part of that purchase when the receipt itemizes it.

Non-prescription blue light glasses are a different case. They are not automatically covered, and they generally need documentation showing the purchase is being used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed condition. That documentation is usually a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed provider.

With Truemed, an independent licensed clinician through Truemed’s independent clinical partner reviews your medical history. If you qualify, they issue the LMN. Your HSA or FSA plan administrator still makes the final call, so keep the itemized receipt and any prescription with your records.

Usually not by default. Most standing desks are treated as a personal or workplace expense rather than a medical one.

A standing desk may qualify when a licensed provider documents that it treats or manages a diagnosed condition, such as a lumbar disc problem or chronic venous insufficiency, and captures that rationale in a Letter of Medical Necessity. A general preference for better posture or a more comfortable workspace is not enough on its own.

Even with a letter, your HSA or FSA plan administrator makes the final call and may ask for additional documentation before approving a claim.

There’s no one-size-fits-all list of conditions that automatically makes a product HSA/FSA eligible. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, including whether the product is being used to treat or manage a specific medical condition.

Some conditions that may qualify when diagnosed by a clinician and supported by medical necessity include:

  • Refractive errors that require vision correction
  • Lumbar disc conditions and chronic lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic venous insufficiency and other circulation issues

This list isn’t exhaustive, and having one of these conditions doesn’t mean a specific product or purchase will qualify. A licensed clinician can help determine whether a product is appropriate for your individual health needs. Learn more at truemed.com/disclosures.

People wear them for comfort during long screen sessions, and that is how the brands here describe them. Clear lenses are made for the working hours, and deeper tints for the evening.

Truemed doesn’t make a medical claim for them and doesn’t give medical advice. Whether a pair is right for you, and whether it may be HSA/FSA eligible for you, is a question for an independent licensed practitioner. Cutting screen hours and taking regular breaks are habits that cost nothing and are worth trying alongside any purchase.
