HSA/FSA Eligible Weight Loss Products

Weight management products can be HSA/FSA eligible, but they generally need to be used to treat a specific medical condition and you’ll need documentation from a healthcare provider showing why the product is medically necessary for your treatment plan.

For example, a weight-loss program or nutritional service used to address a documented condition may qualify with the appropriate documentation. A gym membership or personal training used for general fitness typically wouldn’t.

You may need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a healthcare provider explaining your condition and how the product or service supports your treatment plan.

There’s no comprehensive list of conditions that automatically make weight management products HSA/FSA eligible. Some examples of conditions that may qualify include obesity, diabetes, heart disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and arthritis.

Having one of these conditions doesn’t automatically make a product or service eligible. You’ll still need documentation from a healthcare professional explaining how the product or service is being used to treat or manage your condition.
